ExxonMobil broke ground on an energy-efficient hydrocracker unit at its Rotterdam refinery today. The new installation will convert heavier fractions into cleaner end-products, such as EHCÔ Group II base stocks for higher-grade lubricants and ultra-low-sulfur diesel, in response to increasing global demand.

ExxonMobil’s hydrocracker is one element in a more than $1 billion investment by the Texas-headquartered company to increase the refinery’s competitiveness and will create employment for 600 to 1,300 people over the next three years.

“ExxonMobil’s investment here is crucial for job creation in the Port of Rotterdam and its competitive position. Continuous development within the port area is essential in order to compete with other European ports and the rise of rapidly expanding U.S. ports. In this way, many new jobs are created and the Port of Rotterdam maintains its position as a driver of the Dutch economy,” said the Netherlands Minister of Economic Affairs, Henk Kamp during the groundbreaking ceremony. “The fact that a large multinational, such as ExxonMobil, elects to expand its activities here in the Rotterdam Botlek area, is a significant and very welcome initiative.”

“For more than 125 years, ExxonMobil locations in Rotterdam have been a driving force behind the expansion and growth of the region,” added Joost Van Roost, President and Director of ExxonMobil in the Benelux region. “They deliver affordable and reliable energy, well-paid employment and tax revenues for the government; a prime illustration of the added value that a competitive refinery sector can deliver to the economy.”

The Rotterdam refinery is already one of the most energy-efficient in Europe and the new installation will increase its energy efficiency by a further five percent, employing?for the very first time in Europe?ExxonMobil’s patented hydrocracking technology.
