Miami-based Carnival Corporation, the world’s leading cruise company, will invest $78 million in the city of Almere for a new training facility and hotel on its Carnival Campus and Center of Excellence.
The centerpiece of the campus will be a new and larger Center for Simulator Maritime Training (CSMART), Carnival’s state-of-the-art maritime training facility originally opened in Almere in 2009. CSMART is used by all 10 of Carnival’s worldwide cruise brands for professional maritime training, professional development and research.
The announcement was made at a press conference last week at the existing CSMART location in Almere. In attendance were Vice Mayor of Almere, Mark Pol; Amvest CEO, Wienke Bodwes; and Carnival executives, ?Senior Vice President Corporate Maritime Quality Assurance, David Christie and Managing Director of CSMART, Captain Hans Hederstrom.
At the event, Vice Mayor Pol highlighted the significant economic impact of the new facility—which will bring 75 jobs and $19.5 million to the region’s economy and provide a powerful testimonial from one of the most recognized global brands. Once opened, the new facility will welcome a record number of Carnival’s worldwide staff, bringing additional revenue and commerce for businesses across the Netherlands for years to come.
The expansion is slated to be completed by the summer of 2016, and will make Almere home to the largest cruise training facility in the world.
Located just outside of Amsterdam, Almere is one of Europe’s newest and fastest-growing cities. According to Carnival, the proximity to Schiphol airport, the English language proficiency of the Dutch and the business-friendly climate, were important reasons behind choosing Almere for the investment.
