Discovery Announces European Headquarter for PayTV in the Netherlands
Discovery applies for EU licenses relating to its payTV channels portfolio
Discovery, the global leader in real life entertainment, is establishing a European operational headquarters for its payTV channels in the Netherlands. The company is applying for EU licences relating to its payTV channel portfolio across Europe in Holland.
The company has held a strong presence In the Netherlands since 1989, when it launched its first TV network. Discovery’s Dutch channels business consists of 10 channels including the flagship Discovery Channel, TLC and Eurosport.
This decision ensures absolute continuity of services for its viewers across Europe. This change means new roles being created in Amsterdam and some roles moving from London.
“The Dutch Government and regulatory authorities have been a great partner”
JB Perrette, President & CEO Discovery International, said “The Dutch Government and regulatory authorities have been a great partner throughout our discussions with them relating to our EU payTV portfolio. They have demonstrated a huge commitment to understanding our business needs, minimising disruption and creating the right conditions for a vibrant creative industries hub serving the needs of Europe. I want to thank them for their collaborative approach and extensive support throughout this process.
“Excited to be deepening our relationship with the Netherlands”
Kasia Kieli, President & CEO Discovery EMEA, said: “We have had a significant base in the Netherlands for many years. It is a dynamic market and I am excited to be deepening our relationship with the Netherlands through the creation of a payTV operational headquarters for our European channels.”
Discovery will be in good company amongst other global media players
Eric Wiebes, Minister of Economic Affairs & Climate Policy: “We are delighted that Discovery has chosen to expand in the Netherlands by making it their European hub. The Netherlands is renowned for its creativity and is located right in the heart of Europe. We have great access to an English-speaking talent pool and excellent international digital and transport connections.
Discovery will be in good company amongst other global media players [like Viacom, Netflix, CBS, and homegrown successes such as Endemol-Shine and Talpa].
With uncertainty elsewhere, for example due to Brexit, we welcome companies looking for an alternative as a new business location. The Dutch government readily supports companies and sectors that see extra opportunities in the Netherlands.”
