Largest Fish Farm on Land in the Netherlands

Construction of largest fish farm in the Netherlands started on the Zeeland North Sea coast

On 23 September 2016 the first pile was driven for what will be the Netherlands’ largest fish farm on land: Kingfish Zeeland. The complex covering 5,000 m2 on the North Sea coast in the province of Zeeland will open for business in the summer of 2017, with the aim of supplying the first farmed Yellowtail Kingfish to top-class restaurants and premium retailers across Europe a year later. Invest in Zeeland and the Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency (NFIA) provided support to bring the company to Zeeland.

The choice of the Dutch North Sea coast as the site for a fish farm was based on the specific construction site and its strategic location. The development is expected to provide 15 jobs in the region.

Kees Kloet, aquaculture expert and cofounder: “The Yellowtail Kingfish is a sustainable alternative to tuna that can readily be farmed under the climate conditions prevailing in the Netherlands. The site, which has been specially set up for aquaculture, not only offers clean water from the Eastern Scheldt, but also the infrastructure necessary for farming fish. As a result we will soon be able to supply on demand and absolutely fresh throughout Europe. We therefore expect that there will be great interest in this delicious fish among fish purchasers for restaurants and specialist shops in Europe.”

Connected with the whole of Europe

CEO Ohad Maiman: “With Kingfish we are offering a high-quality fish that is currently available only in limited quantities and has to be flown in from Japan or Australia. Our new location in Colijnsplaat is perfectly situated to connect with logistics and distribution channels for selling the fish across the whole of Europe. Moreover, Zeeland aims to expand into a leading aquaculture center. Consequently we received a great deal of assistance from the local authorities, the international expertise of NFIA and Invest in Zeeland. This meant that the choice in favor of Zeeland was quickly made.”

Kingfish Zeeland will be a complete fish farm: from hatchery to fully grown fish. The aquaculture is done by means of a so-called ‘recirculation system’. The growing conditions can be fully controlled, so that a high level of sustainability can be achieved. Construction is expected to be completed in the summer of 2017. Delivery of the first fish is expected in 2018.
