Telecom Giant Swisscom Establishes Operations in the Netherlands
Switzerland’s leading telecom firm choses Rotterdam for its first software development center abroad
The company will develop and operate software from the Netherlands, supporting its products and services for industries such as banking, health, entertainment and advertising.
Access to talent
In a statement, Swisscom said it was a logical choice to seek a European location outside of Switzerland because it is facing a ‘continuously growing gap of IT professionals’ at home. The move also fits in with the company’s ambition ‘to build the leading DevOps organization in Europe by 2025’.
Rotterdam tech hub
Swisscom says Rotterdam is an ideal location to build its first DevOps unit abroad. As a tech-hub with a growing IT industry and vivid start-up scene, Rotterdam is not only attractive for Swisscom, but also for the sought-after IT experts, Swisscom stated.
“Furthermore, Rotterdam, and the Netherlands in general, are characterized by national diversity and demonstrates an open welcoming culture. An ideal perquisite for attracting IT talents globally,” Swisscom stated.
The Netherlands: digital frontrunner
The Netherlands Vice-minister of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy Maarten Camps expressed pride in Swisscom’s choice to locate its software development center in Rotterdam as part of the Dutch IT ecosystem.
“The Netherlands is one of the digital frontrunners of the European Union. Our country is in an excellent position to develop and implement the economic and societal opportunities that come with digitalization, with an ambition to lead in research, innovation and the application of new technologies,” Camps said.
Innovative IT development
The Swisscom DevOps center approach is unique within the company. All of its employees are and will be specialized in DevOps, managerial structures and hierarchy are kept to a minimum, and everyone is part of an existing team (Tribe/Squad) in Switzerland.
Swisscom: “Thus Rotterdam is kind of a location like Zurich or Bern for Swisscom. Put in other words: the Swisscom DevOps Center employees are part of an international virtual team. As the Swisscom DevOps Center is being built from scratch, all employees are involved in creating its structure, processes and environment.”
The company also stressed the exceptional factor that the starting team at the new Swisscom DevOps Center will be comprised 50:50 of women and men.
