Zalando and Bestseller Pick Amsterdam for Virtual Showroom
The two fashion giants are joining forces in a virtual showroom, which will open up new possibilities for the fashion industry
Combining forces in Amsterdam
Leading European fashion retailers Zalando and Bestseller United (Jack & Jones, Vero Moda, Only) are collaborating on the FashionTrade wholesale platform in Amsterdam. FashionTrade was founded by the Danish retailer Bestseller two years ago as a platform for its 20 fashion chains. Now Berlin-based online retailer Zalando is also joining.
The platform helps fashion professionals reduce costs, buy a lot faster and reduce their inventory. Today, fashion vendors and buyers need to constantly travel throughout Europe to see and buy collections, but FashionTrade’s virtual showroom lets them buy immediately. It also gives designers the chance to present many new collections per year, instead of just one or two. Likewise, it plays an important role as a wholesaler for independent retailers, and with its vast trove of data, the platform can advise buyers about what is currently trending in their local market.
Amsterdam stands out as tech hub
Amsterdam has proven to be an attractive destination for new tech startups launched by large companies. As Bestseller’s Pernille Geneser told a Dutch newspaper, they considered many cities but decided that Amsterdam was the best choice for Bestseller and Zalando to establish their online showroom. “Those other cities are great places to set up a startup,” Geneser said, “but Amsterdam really stood out as a tech hub.”
In Amsterdam, businesses benefit from the “highly international atmosphere and available infrastructure,” the company’s website says. “Located in the heart of Europe, Amsterdam boasts a strong digital community and availability of major talent in the technical/digital/big data field.”
FashionTrade is located at TQ, the startup hub founded by The Next Web. It currently employs about 30 people, with plans to grow to 60 employees within a year. Bestseller, the platform’s founder, has 15,000 employees and 2,700 stores, including 450 stores in the Netherlands. The company plans to move to the former V&D building next spring, with the number of employees in Amsterdam expected to grow from 150 to 375.
Amsterdam is a dynamic fashion hub, and its leading role as an e-commerce pioneer makes the city a very desired location for the fashion industry. Many labels – such as Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, and Chanel – have chosen Amsterdam as the site of their European and global headquarters. In addition, G-Star RAW, Asics, and Toms are just a few of the many brands to run e-commerce operations in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area, which is home to more than 100 fashion houses. Hip, new brands and iconic designers have all flocked to the Amsterdam region to benefit from these advantages, and the city also prides itself on being the denim capital of the world.
