Success Story

Enhancing Clinical Care Through Innovation in the Netherlands

The American medtech company Applied Medical is further expanding in the Netherlands, opening a new state-of-the-art sterilization facility to better serve customers in Europe. It’s part of the company’s ongoing innovation and growth in the Dutch Life Sciences & Health ecosystem.

Applied Medical is on a mission to enhance clinical care through its commitment to improving the reliable availability, affordability and accessibility of healthcare globally. It’s operations in the Netherlands play a key role towards achieving these ambitions.

When the California-based company began searching for a European headquarters in 2006, the benefits to locating in the Netherlands were hard to ignore. The Netherlands’ multilingual, skilled workforce, coupled with a stable and innovative economy, and excellent IT and transport infrastructure stood out.

Ultimately, Applied Medical chose Amersfoort, in the Utrecht region, as the ideal location for it’s first European office. Now, more than 15 years after Applied Medical first chose to invest in Holland, the company has grown from one employee to more than 700 working across multiple departments from the Amersfoort location. And it is taking its medtech solutions to the next level.

Developing innovative and sustainable medtech solutions

In November 2022, Applied Medical opened its new cutting-edge sterilization facility (expected to be fully operational in early 2023). Being based in Amersfoort, in close proximity to its customers in Europe, has allowed Applied Medical to maintain reliable supply in addition to reducing its carbon footprint.

Reflecting on its growth plan in Europe, Rob van der Meer, President Europe for Applied Medical, shared: “Our ambition is to double our activities in Europe in the next five years by expanding our product portfolio and producing and sterilizing our products here in the Netherlands, thanks to our dedicated team members.”

Applied Medical is proof that the Netherlands is a place to accelerate business and benefit people and the planet. The company invested €70 million between 2016 and 2021 alone and expanded its operations to 17 countries in Europe. Applied Medical has received a breadth of support to establish and expand in Europe not only from the Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency (NFIA), but from Invest in Holland Partner ROM Utrecht Region, and from the municipality of Amersfoort.
