Novocycle Accelerates Battery Recycling in the Netherlands
Türkiye-based energy innovator launches pilot facility to enhance the circular battery supply chain in Europe
The Turkish company Novocycle, a pioneer in sustainable lithium-ion battery recycling, recently officially launched its pilot facility project in the Netherlands. Located at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus, the project is backed by the Just Transition Fund (JTF) under Stimulus and the European Union. The state-of-the-art pilot plant is the first step toward commercial-scale facilities across Europe.
Sustainable solutions for safe, efficient battery recycling
Novocycle’s recycling plant is aimed at providing a solution to the millions of batteries that are used for electric vehicles (EV) and renewable energy storage at the end of their life cycle.
Novocycle CEO Taha Uluhan explains: “Our mission is to transform lithium-ion battery recycling into a high-efficiency, low-emission process that supports Europe’s transition to sustainable energy.” Traditional recycling methods rely on shredding and energy-intensive chemical processes, leading to waste, pollution, and the destruction of valuable battery materials. Novocycle’s approach preserves high-purity cathode and anode materials, significantly reducing environmental impact while maximizing recovery efficiency.
As battery production grows, so does manufacturing scrap—unused battery materials that, without effective recycling, add to environmental waste. Novocycle’s pilot plant ensures that both end-of-life batteries and production scrap are efficiently recycled, strengthening Europe’s battery value chain.
Advancing cleantech solutions in the Dutch energy ecocystem
Novocycle chose to locate its state-of-the-art facility at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus, a leading hub for circular economy innovation and part of the Dutch clean energy ecosystem. The company was assisted in its expansion to the Netherlands by the Invest in Holland network, including the Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency (NFIA) Türkiye office, and LIOF.
South Limburg is uniquely positioned as a key industrial hub for Europe’s energy transition, offering both strategic geographic advantages and strong industrial infrastructure. Located near the borders of Germany and Belgium, the region provides efficient access to key battery manufacturers, research institutions, and major European markets. The region’s commitment to sustainability and innovation makes it a prime location for future business expansion, allowing Novocycle to further scale operations, attract investment, and drive industry-wide adoption of sustainable battery recycling.
Novocycle reports: As Europe accelerates its push for clean energy, closed-loop battery recycling will be key to achieving sustainability goals. This pilot facility is a proof-of-concept that will lay the foundation for a larger commercial rollout—helping meet EU regulations while ensuring Europe remains a leader in battery technology.
