Equal1, an Irish company specialized in silicon-powered quantum computing, has expanded to the Netherlands. It is working in a strategic partnership with TNO, the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research, to accelerate the development of next-generation silicon-based quantum devices. The collaboration, which was initiated in late 2024, is aimed at enhancing the fabrication of quantum system-on-chip (QSoC) processors. The partners are developing a full-stack quantum computer with an AI layer using semiconductor technology.

Strengthening the Dutch high-tech systems ecosystem

Working together in the Dutch high-tech ecosystem, the partners will leverage TNO’s expertise in nanofabrication and advanced materials alongside its state-of-the-art facilities. The partnership reinforces the Netherlands’ position as a global quantum hub and aligns with the country’s National Technology Strategy.

Enabling compact, on-premise quantum computing

Commenting on the partnership, Jason Lynch, CEO of Equal1 said: “Our vision is to scale millions of high-performance qubits onto a single chip, integrating all electronics and quantum systems into our QSoC, leveraging our hybrid UnityQ architecture, and enabling compact, on-premises quantum computing. This partnership represents a significant step forward in Equal1’s roadmap toward creating the world’s most scalable quantum computers.”

Rogier Verberk, Director of Semicon & Quantum at TNO said: “We are immensely proud to witness the evolution of what began as a simple project into a strategic partnership. This milestone reflects the dedication and visionary efforts of the teams at Equal1 and TNO, as we pioneer the future of quantum computing together.”

The House of Quantum in Delft

The partnership is focusing on spin qubit technology at Equal1’s new center of excellence and research facility in Delft, the Netherlands. The center is located within the House of Quantum, a premier hub for quantum technology research that offers Equal1 direct access to a robust network of quantum research and industry expertise, as well as state-of-the-art equipment. Powered by Quantum Delta NL, the House of Quantum also provides the quantum technology ecosystem with the spaces and facilities required to excel and propel technological advancements. By establishing itself in this dynamic environment, Equal1 is poised to leverage abundant resources, talent, knowledge and community available in this national campus.

Christiaan van Oord, Director House of Quantum said: “We are delighted and proud to welcome Equal1 to our ecosystem in Delft. By establishing itself here, Equal1 enriches our community not only with their cutting-edge expertise but also with a team of renowned experts. We are eager to support Equal1’s continuous development and look forward to witnessing the transformative contributions they will make.”
