Hyosung Heavy Industries Opens European R&D Center at Dutch Electricity Campus to Power the Grid of the Future
South Korean leader in grid technology joins the Netherlands’ growing energy innovation ecosystem
Hyosung Heavy Industries, the South Korean leader in energy solutions, has officially opened its new European R&D Center at the Electricity Campus in Arnhem, the Netherlands. The investment marks a major step in Hyosung’s European expansion and strengthens the Netherlands’ position as a hub for energy innovation and grid modernisation.
Located on Electricity Campus at the historic KEMA site, long recognised as a center of excellence in energy research, the new facility will focus on developing advanced technologies to support Europe’s transition to a more sustainable and resilient electricity grid. The center will specialise in three key areas: eco-friendly alternatives to SF₆-based high-voltage switchgear, High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) systems for long-distance power transmission, and digital grid solutions to enhance the stability, flexibility and resilience of Europe’s power infrastructure.
Ideal location for R&D activities
“The Electricity Campus in Arnhem is the ideal location for us to expand our R&D activities in Europe,” said Taehee Woo, CEO of Hyosung Heavy Industries Europe. “We’re close to grid operators, research institutes like KEMA, and industrial partners. This is the perfect place to collaborate on technologies that will make the electricity system more sustainable, reliable, and affordable.”
The Netherlands offers a thriving ecosystem for energy innovation, with strong public-private collaboration and a highly skilled workforce. Hyosung’s arrival was facilitated by Oost NL, City Developer-S, KEMA, the Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency (NFIA), and other local partners. Their joint efforts reflect the country’s commitment to attracting global companies that are tackling the world’s most pressing challenges.
