The Netherlands continues to solidify its reputation as a hub for both immersive technologies and life sciences & health innovation. One of the latest examples is Phospho, a biomedical animation company that recently relocated its headquarters to the Van Nelle Factory in Rotterdam after more than a decade in London. This marks a strategic move to advance the company’s vision for the future by engaging directly with partners in the Dutch ecosystem. In doing so, Phospho will build valuable connections between two of the Netherlands’ vital industries and bring new creative solutions to enhance biomedical research.

Strategic growth in Europe’s connected life sciences & health metropolis

Several factors drove Phospho’s decision to scale up in the Netherlands, including the country’s dynamic research and industry ecosystem, collaborative business climate and strategic European location enabling connectivity between the company’s Dutch and U.K. operations. Rotterdam, in particular, stood out for its proximity to leading academic institutions, strong health tech cluster and access to skilled talent in relevant fields.

“There is so much wonderful research taking place in Rotterdam and the Zuid-Holland region in general, and we’re excited to provide a supporting role by helping visualize and communicate this important work,” said Dr. Jeroen Claus, founder of Phospho and former cancer researcher. “I’ve always known Rotterdam to be a city embracing design, technology and innovation. It feels like a perfect fit for us.”

The Dutch life sciences & health ecosystem is one of the most concentrated and collaborative in Europe, opening the door for Phospho to partner with renowned medical centers, research institutions, biotech firms and pharmaceutical companies. Combined with the Netherlands’ tech-driven creative sector, this landscape offers a living laboratory for research & development at the intersection of science and digital media.

A natural home for immersive innovation bridging science and creativity

Founded in 2014, Phospho was born out of a deep understanding of the challenges scientists face in visually communicating complex biomedical research. With few competitors capable of matching its quality and precision, the company has built a reputation for translating scientific concepts into engaging animations and graphics. Phospho has become a global standard-bearer in biomedical content creation, bridging the gap between science and storytelling.

By selecting the Netherlands as its new base, Phospho gains access to a dynamic community where these two strengths converge. Rotterdam embodies the Dutch spirit of creativity and entrepreneurship, offering a platform where designers, scientists and health innovators collaborate to bring new ideas to market. This synergy provides fertile ground for Phospho to apply its creative technologies in ways that improve healthcare, accelerate research and make complex science accessible worldwide.

Moreover, the country’s strong track record in animation education, such as at Breda University of Applied Sciences, and its network of science communication agencies positions Phospho for continued growth. Claus explained: “Visual communication of science remains an under-served niche in Europe. We see a real opportunity to collaborate with local talent and institutions here.”

Support from the Invest in Holland network

The Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency and Invest in Holland network partners InnovationQuarter and Rotterdam Partners – alongside industry network Rotterdam Square –collectively supported Phospho’s relocation. Together, these organizations connected the company with local partners and resources to help Phospho hit the ground running.

As Claus notes, “An international move is an exciting time for a company, but it does come with a lot of practical challenges that are difficult to sort out from abroad…. [The Invest in Holland network] really helped make the move to the Netherlands as pain-free as it can be, and we’re incredibly grateful,”

“NFIA was our first port of call when we were forming plans to move to the Netherlands. They were able to provide valuable information on a whole range of topics, from local networks to immigration and legal considerations. Thanks to NFIA we were able to find the right partners to help us organize the transition,” concluded Claus.

As Phospho settles into its new home, NFIA and the Invest in Holland network remain committed to supporting its journey and helping other innovative companies discover the opportunities the Netherlands has to offer.
