PhotonPath Advances Integrated Photonics R&D and Manufacturing in the Netherlands

Italian deep-tech company PhotonPath is working with Eindhoven-based XIVER to scale its Oxyn integrated photonics platform

Italian integrated photonics pioneer, PhotonPath, has entered into a strategic partnership with XIVER in the Netherlands to scale the production of its proprietary Oxyn platform.

XIVER is Europe’s only independent pure-play (micro-electromechanical systems) MEMS foundry and the partnership will expand PhotonPath’s wafer capacity, improve lead times, and ensure consistent, repeatable quality for high-performance photonic devices.  It will also support the future development of the technology, with XIVER serving as a strategic partner for both production and the expansion of the technology.

The collaboration also aligns closely with the forthcoming European Chips Act 2, contributing to a stronger European integrated photonics supply chain. The Act aims to strengthen Europe’s semiconductor industry and reduce strategic dependencies, boost demand for chips, and support the design and production of advanced and mainstream chips in the EU.

Combining R&D with scalable production

PhotonPath develops advanced photonic integrated circuits (PICs) and patented control systems to deliver products and systems that redefine connectivity and sensing. Its proprietary Oxyn platform, combined with heterogeneous integration capabilities, enables the efficient design and manufacturing of compact, scalable, and reconfigurable optical devices for telecom, datacom and sensing applications.

By transferring this technology to XIVER’s 200 mm semi-conductor wafer facility at High Tech Campus Eindhoven, it can implement immediate scaling and yield improvements while planning further developments.

The collaboration brings together PhotonPath’s expertise in integrated photonics design, manufacturing transfer, and platform development with XIVER’s mature manufacturing environment that is tightly aligned with the demands of advanced photonic platforms.

Connected to the Dutch HTSM ecosystem

The Netherlands has established itself as a leading hub for integrated photonics. With rich technological expertise and a well-connected and scalable high-tech ecosystem, it offers a complete environment to accelerate innovation and commercialization of photonic integrated circuits and applications.

PhotonPath considered several foundry partners in Europe and elsewhere before selecting XIVER. Based at High Tech Campus Eindhoven, XIVER offers a mature photonics-ready manufacturing environment and deep experience in translating complex designs into stable, repeatable production.

The partnership also connects PhotonPath to the Netherlands’ high-tech systems and materials ecosystem and supports the photonics value chain. The High Tech Campus Eindhoven is home to over 300 high-tech companies, researchers and institutions, offering state-of-the-art facilities, world-class expertise and a dynamic network.

The collaboration was supported by ecosystem partners including the Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency, the Brabant Development Agency (BOM), PhotonDelta and the European Photonics Industry Consortium. PhotonPath first connected with Dutch partners through the European Conference on Optical Communication, helping pave the way for this cross-border R&D and manufacturing partnership.
