POYNTING Antennas Establishes New Branch in the Netherlands to Advance its Innovation
The high tech company opens its first R&D division outside South Africa in Nijmegen
POYNTING Antennas, a South Africa based global leader in high-performance antenna technology, has opened a new branch in the Netherlands. This marks a major step in the company’s international growth strategy and introduces its first R&D division outside South Africa.
The new branch, located in Nijmegen, will serve as POYNTING’s international sales hub and as a center for research and development in Europe.
With more than 20 years of engineering excellence, POYNTING designs and manufactures antennas that enable enhanced wireless communication across multiple sectors such as Mobility, Maritime, FWA, IoT, and Mining & Tunnelling — as well as a wide and continuously expanding range of other applications.
Its solutions combine advanced electromagnetic technology with smart mechanical design to deliver superior connectivity — even in the most challenging environments. Beyond Africa, the company has local teams in the US, Europe, and the APAC region, reinforcing its global presence.
Connecting with expertise and talent in the tech community
POYNTING chose to locate in the Dutch high tech ecosystem, in particular in the Nijmegen region, to connect to the strong RF and high-tech ecosystem which offers access to research institutions, skilled talent, and leading companies in wireless and sensor technologies.
“Nijmegen offers exactly the environment we were looking for,” said Margot Fourie, Operations Manager at Poynting B.V. “It combines strong technical expertise, an active innovation network, and a great quality of life for our employees. Being part of the broader RF tech community helps us collaborate, innovate, and grow together.”
The company already collaborates with logistics partner MIDL in Nijmegen, which played an important role in connecting POYNTING to the local ecosystem. By positioning itself within this strong RF technology cluster, POYNTING is ready to innovate together with regional partners and research institutions.
Support from the Invest in Holland network
POYNTING was supported in its expansion journey by the Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency (NFIA) and the East Netherlands Development Agency (Oost NL), both partners in the Invest in Holland network.
“The advantage of a global presence from NFIA became clear once again when onboarding POYNTING,” said Mark Reijneker, NFIA Country Director in South Africa. “NFIA in Germany was approached end of 2020 by POYNTING. In 2021, POYNTING’s business expansion journey was further spearheaded by the POYNTING headquarters in Pretoria and the NFIA offices in South Africa. It’s great that Invest in Holland partners Oost NL and NFIA could establish very frequent and personal contact with POYNTING, while serving their needs in both South Africa and in the Netherlands!”
Bram Geertsma, Advisor Tech & Energy at Oost NL, said: “We supported the company by conducting a comparative analysis of the Netherlands and neighbouring countries, providing detailed insights into the business climate, logistics, and quality of life. Ultimately this resulted in POYNTING’s choice for the Netherlands.”
Fourie explains: “NFIA and Oost NL provided us with advice that sped up the process of our European expansion. Oost NL then further helped us with a loan for our Dutch entity to make a strong start in Nijmegen. Their aid has been immensely valuable for us.”
Strengthening the innovative Dutch Ecosystem
East Netherlands offers POYNTING a thriving technological ecosystem with direct access to research institutions, skilled talent, and leading companies in wireless and sensor technologies. As part of the ecosystem, POYNTING benefits from close proximity to organizations such as HighTechNL, RF Knowledge Lab, and Briskr. Welcome Center Food Valley supported POYNTING’s employees with their search for suitable housing.
“Companies like POYNTING strengthen the regional ecosystem. Their presence creates high-value R&D jobs and new collaboration opportunities for existing companies in the same branch. We’re very happy with POYNTING’s choice for the Netherlands,” concludes Geertsma.
