Singaporean Battery Manufacturer Durapower Supercharges Presence in Netherlands

Building on strong bilateral relations between Singapore and the Netherlands, Durapower is expanding their facility

Durapower

Singaporean battery manufacturer Durapower Technology further expanding its operations in the Dutch High Tech Systems and Sustainable Energy ecosystems. The business expanded to the country a decade ago in alignment with the European country’s push for electrification, and started by powering electric buses and trucks. Today, they also supply batteries for autonomous vehicles at the Port of Rotterdam as well as cranes and marine vessels, with an even greater presence in the Netherlands planned.

With Durapower’s commitment to an expansion in the Netherlands, the business will contribute towards scalable, reliable net-zero energy solutions. These won’t only be for the Netherlands, but will assist in driving the transition across the globe.

Durapower Technology is a leading example of positive economic relations between Singapore and the Netherlands, which were recently further strengthened. Representatives from Singapore and the Netherlands met in May as part of the SG60 Showcase to celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations, over which the two countries have fostered a strong and mutually beneficial relationship.

Efficiency of setting up in the Netherlands

Speaking of Durapower’s expansion into the Netherlands, Kelvin Lim, Group Chief Executive Officer at Durapower, said: ‘Setting up a business in the Netherlands is quite efficient I must say. We didn’t have a lot of challenges […], with regards to registration. We had a lot of help from NFIA, both from Singapore and from the Netherlands. We had great support from Enterprise Singapore, again from the Singapore in the Europe Team. That makes things very easy for us, very efficient.’

At the event, Durapower committed to the expansion of their facility in the Netherlands and signed a Statement of Intent (SOI) between Durapower Holdings and its Dutch partners from automotive and maritime industries VDL, Spiering Mobile Cranes, EST-Floattech and GEBA – Green Road Machinery. Both ceremonies were witnessed by Dirk Beljaarts, Minister of Economic Affairs for the Netherlands.

Articulating the Netherlands’ position in Europe, Kelvin Lim continued: ‘Europe remains a very important market for us. And, as we expand into the other parts of Europe, we wanted to use the Netherlands as a base and create a network effect to enable us to expand further.’

A strong battery ecosystem

The Netherlands has a strong ecosystem which supports battery cell technology.  Across the country, there are experts in materials, design and equipment for battery cell technology. They are specialized in solutions related to modules and packs, mobility and storage, stability, safety, and data security. The Battery Competence Cluster – NL also provides easy access to talents who know how to gain a competitive edge and hit the market at scale.
