Thai Union, a Thailand-based company, has launched its Innovation Hub in Wageningen, the Netherlands to accelerate innovation for its shelf-stable seafood brands across the world. The company is one of the latest to join the Dutch agrifood ecosystem to innovate in future-focused food solutions.
Thai Union Group PCL is the world’s seafood leader, which offers high quality seafood products to customers across the world.
The state-of-the-art facility will be dedicated to market-driven innovation, product and packaging development for its ambient seafood brands. The company chose Wageningen to benefit from the innovative spirit of the food ecosystem in the region, and the ability to collaborate with Wageningen University & Research, Europe’s no. 1 university in nutrition and food science.
Around 40 product, process and packaging developers, nutritionists, sensory and consumer scientists are now working at or for the Innovation Hub, in close collaboration with Thai Union’s brands and the Global Innovation Center (GIC) in Bangkok.
Innovation as a strategic priority
Thai Union has a SeaChange® 2030 sustainability strategy, a plan to reshape the seafood industry with solutions for People and Planet that better sustain a future for all. This focus aligns closely with the Netherland’s goals to continue innovating smart solutions for the future, with a key focus on sustainable production.
It’s due to the Netherland’s forward-thinking culture, and one open to cross-disciplinary ideas, that helps pioneering companies such as SeaChange to break the mould. This culture is being backed up by investment, given that between 2021 and 2025, the Dutch Government has allocated and has been spending 20 billion Euros to future-forward innovation.
Assistance in finding new location
The Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency (NFIA) assisted Thai Union in its search for a new location, together with the regional development agency Oost NL, Wageningen Campus, and the Business & Science Park Wageningen.
