Urenco, the international supplier of enrichment services and fuel cycle products, is further expanding its capacity in the Netherlands with an additional production hall at enrichment facility SP5 in Almelo. The investment underlines Urenco’s long-term confidence in the Twente region, and provides a significant boost to the economy, innovation and job creation in Overijssel, the Netherlands.

Major boost for the region

The investments in additional enrichment capacity will offer long-term employment in the region, both directly with Urenco, and among suppliers and construction partners. This will further bolster the facility’s position in Almelo as one of the most significant industrial employers in Twente.

Erwin Hoogland, Provincial Executive in Overijssel: “Urenco is indispensable in strengthening the nuclear energy ecosystem in the Netherlands and abroad, so we are proud that the company has chosen to grow and to invest in Almelo. Together with Oost NL, we are pleased to support its expansion, not only to support the energy transition, but also in bringing entrepreneurship, innovation and talent to our region.”

Hilde van der Meer, Commissioner at the Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency (NFIA): “We see a growing interest from international companies in our energy ecosystem. These businesses are looking for a location to develop and apply new technologies, and the Netherlands provides a thriving ecosystem for collaborating with local businesses, partners and knowledge institutions.  The expansion of Urenco in Almelo strengthens the Netherlands’ appeal for innovative foreign companies in the nuclear energy sector.”

Investment in the future

Urenco has enrichment plants in the Netherlands, Germany, the UK and the USA and plays a key role in the global transition to reliable, CO2-free energy. Urenco enriches uranium for around 150 nuclear power plants worldwide. The expansion in Almelo is part of an international capacity program that is responding to the growing demand for nuclear fuel for reactors, and the production of isotopes for medical and industrial adaptations.

Ad Louter, Managing Director of Urenco Netherlands: “This announcement shows that Urenco remains committed to a strong, reliable western supply chain for nuclear fuel. The expansion in Almelo is an important step in our global capacity program and enables us to offer security of supply to customers worldwide. At the same time, we’re ensuring stable and long-term employment in and around Almelo, because each production hall can run for tens of years. Just this last May, we celebrated the 25th anniversary of our first hall of enrichment plant SP5.”
