Abbott Expands With New Distribution Center in the Netherlands
Breda facility offers extra capacity for Abbott’s high demand medical nutrition products
Global medical technology company Abbott has officially opened its new distribution center in Breda, the Netherlands. The state-of-the-art facility will support the growing demand for Abbott’s science-based food (medical nutrition) products.
The new facility is located adjacent to the current distribution centers and offers more than 18,000 m² of storage space and an additional capacity of 22,000 pallets. Together, the Breda distribution centers form the logistical heart of Abbott’s worldwide operations.
Logistics for medical food products
The expansion is needed because of the growing demand for Abbott’s medical food products. The firm has also revealed ambitious plans to expand its Abbot Labs operation in Zwolle where it produces baby food and intravenous nutrition products. The expansion involves an investment in the tens of millions of euros and will create around 100 new jobs, taking the workforce at this location to around 550. The Zwolle facility produces more than 180 nutritional products that are distributed throughout the rest of Europe and further afield.
In addition to a new production line for liquid medical nutrition, the expansion will encompass a new packaging line and energy supply. The new production line is expected to be up and running by the spring of 2021 and recruitment has already commenced. The products from the Zwolle factory are distributed from Breda to countries within and outside of Europe.
