Mitsubishi Moves to Build New Green Hydrogen Production Plant in the Netherlands

The Japanese company and its Dutch subsidiary commit to accelerating the global energy transition from Rotterdam

Japan-based Mitsubishi Corporation is planning to establish the Eneco Electrolyzer, the world’s largest green hydrogen production plant, in the Netherlands. Located in Rotterdam’s Europoort, this project is set to advance the development of green hydrogen and associated renewable energy projects in Europe.

Leading this project is Eneco Diamond Hydrogen, a new joint venture between Mitsubishi and its Rotterdam-based subsidiary Eneco. “The production of green hydrogen is essential for a successful energy transition,” said As Tempelman, CEO of Eneco. “Investing in green hydrogen is an important part of our strategy and I am pleased that we can now take concrete steps.” The company aims to begin construction in 2026, and the plant is currently scheduled to start operating in 2029.

Shaping a sustainable future together

The Netherlands, known for its commitment to accelerating the energy transition, provides Mitsubishi and Eneco with the necessary resources to achieve their goals. Leveraging the country’s proactive stance on sustainability and innovation, it’s no surprise Mitsubishi has chosen the Netherlands as its hub for leading green hydrogen development. Rotterdam also offers an ideal location with a skilled workforce and collaborative ecosystem to actively drive the global energy transition forward.

Revolutionizing hydrogen production

Central to this project is the Eneco Electrolyzer. The facility will harness renewable energy from solar parks and wind farms to the industrial sector. Replacing natural gas with hydrogen as a fuel in both industrial and electricity sectors, this production plant will provide more flexible electricity production. This partnership capitalizes on Eneco’s extensive experience in the renewable energy sector and Mitsubishi Corporation’s vast global network. Mitsubishi aims to apply insights gained from Eneco Diamond Hydrogen at a global scale, making a significant contribution to decarbonization as the demand for renewable energy rises. Together, they are advancing green hydrogen development and reshaping the energy landscape in the Netherlands and beyond.
