ZeroTier Expands with New European Office in the Netherlands
The American company will meet growing demand for secure, flexible digital networks in the European market and globally
San Francisco-based ZeroTier, a global software-defined network company, has announced the opening of its European office in Utrecht, the Netherlands. This strategic move into the Dutch tech ecosystem brings ZeroTier closer to its customers across Europe and the wider EMEA region, where the company has seen significant growing demand from individual users to enterprise-level customers.
“We are excited to officially announce the opening of our new European office in the Netherlands,” said Andrew Gault, ZeroTier CEO. “This new office will allow us to both supplement our development efforts and better serve our growing EU customer-base, demonstrating our confidence in the pan-EMEA market.”
ZeroTier aims to transform digital networks by making it easier to connect devices and systems across the globe. The platform combines the security of a next-generation VPN with the ease of software-defined wide-area networks – enabling highly secure, flexible virtual networks for everything from remote teams and home users to Internet-of-Things infrastructure and defense applications.
Strategic location to scale up in Europe
ZeroTier’s move to the Netherlands reflects its global momentum and long-term commitment to scaling in high-growth markets. Early in the expansion process, ZeroTier’s team discovered that the Netherlands is uniquely well-suited for international operations due to its location in the heart of Europe, offering easy access to major markets and excellent infrastructure.
The country is also attractive from a talent perspective: its international orientation and high English proficiency make it a natural hub for recruiting the diverse, skilled professionals ZeroTier needs to scale its EU operations. Local experts trained in software, cloud and networking technologies are an ideal fit for the company’s engineering and go-to-market teams.
ZeroTier chose Utrecht specifically because of its central location within the country, public transport system and close proximity to Amsterdam. This balance enables international connectivity while placing ZeroTier in a city that is vibrant, accessible and well-integrated into the Dutch innovation landscape.
Led by Dutch tech veterans Janjaap Bos and Alexander Colenbrander, the Utrecht office strengthens ZeroTier’s ability to serve enterprise clients, navigate EU regulations and expand its team across engineering and sales. In the long-term future, ZeroTier looks to leverage the Netherlands as a strategic base for driving innovation, strengthening local relationships and supporting the broader adoption of secure, decentralized networking across the region.
Tech-forward innovation for a new digital security landscape
The Netherlands is a natural fit for ZeroTier in other ways as well. Along with a central location, it offers strong digital infrastructure and a thriving startup and tech ecosystem. The country’s focus on innovation, remote/hybrid work and cross-border digital solutions aligns well with ZeroTier’s mission to make complex networks simple and accessible.
ZeroTier is expanding at a time when cybersecurity in Europe is evolving quickly as digital threats grow. Industry players are shifting toward privacy-first, decentralized and zero-trust solutions. The Netherlands, with its tech-forward ecosystem and focus on digital resilience, has emerged as a natural leader in cybersecurity. As part of the Dutch ecosystem, ZeroTier aims to meet growing demand for secure, scalable connectivity paired with simplicity and control.
The company’s solutions give companies in the Netherlands, Europe and across the globe the ability to securely and seamlessly connect devices. ZeroTier’s technology is designed with privacy and defense-grade security at its core, using end-to-end encryption and a peer-to-peer architecture to eliminate data-in-transit exposure. Because networks are software-defined and decentralized, users retain full control over how and where their data flows, aligning with Europe’s data protection standards.
“ZeroTier’s mascot is the tardigrade, famous for its extreme survival ability. It is practically invisible and indestructible, just like ZeroTier’s network infrastructure.”
Partnering with the Invest in Holland network
ZeroTier first connected with the Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency (NFIA) and Invest in Holland regional partner ROM Utrecht Region through Colenbrander’s network and his deep knowledge of the Dutch startup ecosystem. NFIA played a pivotal role in ZeroTier’s decision to expand to the Netherlands: providing the company with best practices, detailed country data, insights into the legal and regulatory environment, subsidy information and introducing the company’s leadership to a valuable network.
Through these connections, ZeroTier learned directly from other U.S.-based companies that have successfully expanded to the Netherlands, giving them concrete perspectives on what to expect and how to prepare. ROM Utrecht also proved instrumental in helping ZeroTier deepen its roots within the Dutch innovation ecosystem. The regional development agency provided support through events, introductions to key players and ongoing support in navigating local opportunities.
“Both NFIA and ROM Utrecht Region have gone far beyond just providing information,” company leaders concluded. “They’ve truly been partners in our expansion journey.”
