Aduro Clean Technologies Establishes a European Hub in the Netherlands
The Canadian company drives innovation and collaboration in plastic upcycling
Aduro Clean Technologies, a developer of water-based technologies that convert waste plastics, heavy bitumen and renewable oils into valuable resources, has established a European hub in the Netherlands. Based in Geleen, Aduro Clean Technologies Europe (ACTE), will advance the hydrochemolytic process for sustainable transformation of waste plastics.
The expansion to the Netherlands represents significant increase to Aduro’s international footprint, highlighting the company’s commitment to scale up its circular ambitions.
Vision to action in recycling innovation
The strong regional relationships cultivated by Aduro – like its successful partnerships with Brightlands Chemelot Campus and Chemelot Innovation and Learning Labs – made selecting the Netherlands as its European base an easy choice.
“Brightlands Chemelot Campus is proud to welcome Aduro Clean Technologies, a company that shares our vision for a sustainable future. Their innovative approach to transforming waste plastics into valuable resources is a testament to the power of chemistry and technology. We are excited to see how their presence will enrich our campus and contribute to the advancement of sustainable practices in Europe,” said Karen Scholz, Business Development Manager at Brightlands Chemelot Campus.
From leading in mechanical recycling to other sustainable solutions, the Dutch are ranked first worldwide for material reuse rate. Thanks to its collaborative environment, the Netherlands has steadily developed an ecosystem of companies, each working to revolutionize recycling. Dutch companies and research institutes account for 11.5% of all international patents of plastic recycling technologies within the EU.
Aduro will join other Netherlands-based companies prioritizing sustainability through recycling innovations. Expanding in the Netherlands ensures sustainability remains a top priority for Aduro while gaining access to world-class infrastructure and an innovation ecosystem.
Broadening plastics’ potential for upcycling
Aduro’s new Dutch facility aims to usher in a new-era resource in the circular economy. With the Dutch at the forefront of this movement – having established a goal to achieve a circular economy by 2050 – Aduro gains access to collaborative opportunities that expand beyond its Geleen location.
The company’s new facility in Geleen will focus on their Hydrochemolytic™ Plastics Upcycling (HPU), which enables the environmentally responsible upcycling of materials such as end-of-life plastic and tire rubber. Above all, HPU reduces the likelihood of materials ending up in landfills or being incinerated, instead transforming them into diesel.
The HPU process doesn’t just reduce the need for crude oil production and refinement, it also has the potential to generate high-value platform chemicals, like solvents and specialty chemicals for consumer products. Aduro’s product is actively working to provide a solution to the worldwide plastic waste issue.
Advancing the circular economy together
The Netherlands is known for fostering an ecosystem dedicated to strategic partnerships as it is for its sustainability values. In fact, the Dutch triple-helix approach includes businesses, research institutes and government bodies to collaborate to solve global problems.
“Establishing a European hub is a significant stride in our strategic journey,” said Ofer Vicus, CEO of Aduro. “It will not only allow us to better engage and serve our stakeholders in the region but undoubtedly act as a catalyst for several strategic goals we have in Europe. We are enthusiastic about the promising outlook our new hub fosters, emphasizing our dedication to advancing our technology, nurturing partnerships, and engaging with stakeholders across Europe. We are very grateful for the collaborative partnerships we have already formed in the Netherlands such as the one we have with Brightlands, and we look forward to continuing to work together with our partners and to strengthen new regional partnerships to advance the circular economy and promote sustainable practices.”
