KEMIWATT launches Dutch operations to power port electrification and accelerate the green energy transition

French energy technology company establishes a Netherlands subsidiary to develop safe, scalable energy storage solutions for ports and industry across Northern Europe

KEMIWATT, a French developer of aqueous organic redox flow batteries, has established a new subsidiary in the Netherlands. The new entity will accelerate the company’s commercial development in Northern Europe and build strategic partnerships for large-scale, long-duration energy storage projects.

The expansion reinforces the company’s ambition to deliver sustainable, safe, and competitive long-duration energy storage solutions tailored to the needs of industrial companies and power grids across Europe.

Storage designed for ports and industry

KEMIWATT converts liquid tank storage into long duration energy storage systems using organic flow battery technology. As it is non-flammable, the solution is ideal for applications where safety, reliability, scalability and extended operating durations are critical, making it particularly well suited to ports, industrial sites and other energy-intensive environments. The repurposing of tank-storage assets also creates new value from existing infrastructure and enables large-scale storage without relying on critical raw materials.

The electrification of ports is increasing demand for electricity through shore power, electric vessels, charging infrastructure and industrial processes. KEMIWATT’s technology helps address this challenge by storing electricity when capacity is available and delivering it when demand peaks.

By combining innovation, safety, resource efficiency and infrastructure reuse, KEMIWATT directly supports the Netherlands’ strategy to build a sustainable and resilient energy system.

A strategic base for European growth

The Netherlands emerged as a natural choice for the expansion. The country combines major ports, extensive liquid-bulk storage infrastructure and large industrial clusters. Its focus on energy innovation, sustainability and practical solutions for the energy transition also closely align with KEMIWATT’s technology and long-term strategy.

With its central European location and connectivity, the Netherlands is also an excellent base for broader European expansion, allowing the company to develop reference projects and partnerships that can be replicated across other markets.

Building partnerships in the Dutch energy ecosystem

The Netherlands offers a highly connected maritime and energy ecosystem, with deep industrial expertise and a strong international outlook. KEMIWATT will be plugging into this community, working with industry stakeholders to advance grid flexibility, electrification and energy resilience. The company aims to work closely with industrial customers, port and terminal operators, infrastructure owners and energy-sector partners to develop solutions tailored to each site. It will also build a network of engineering, technology, financing and project-delivery partners to support project execution and growth in the Netherlands and across Europe.

Support from the Invest in Holland network

KEMIWATT was supported in their expansion by the Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency in France. NFIA helped highlight the benefits of establishing and developing KEMIWATT’s business in the Netherlands and introduced the company to key players in the Dutch battery ecosystem, as well as to the investment community.

“What we particularly appreciate is NFIA’s continued proactive engagement. They regularly reach out to stay in touch, propose follow-up meetings to review our progress, and make sure we receive all the support we need as we move forward. This level of commitment and ongoing support is particularly valuable when entering a new market and navigating a new business environment.”, said Muhammad Zubair, Head of Development at Kemiwatt.

Looking ahead, KEMIWATT aims to make the Netherlands a key hub for commercial-scale projects and continued growth across Europe.
